Climb the tower with the family
Check the visitor’s guide to take a ramble through the incredible history of St Rumbold’s Tower, with plenty of interesting facts and loads of fun activities for children. You may even run into the tower guard or the city carillonneur as you make your way up or down the stairs. Along the way, you can catch your breath on the different levels, making the climb of 538 steps to the breathtaking view perfectly manageable for children too.
Get more out of your visit with AR and VR
Thanks to an AR application, a Burgundian spectacle from 1516 comes to life before your eyes. On the skywalk, two virtual reality viewers will teach you more about various Burgundian palaces, city oases and monuments that you can spot from the roof of St Rumbold’s Tower. For various reasons, not everyone can visit St Rumbold’s Tower. Curious what you’re missing? Ask at the tower desk for a tablet on which to view the AR and VR experiences.
Group visit with guide
Climb the 538 steps of St Rumbold’s Tower with a city guide or carillonneur. Along the way, you’ll explore the tower rooms and hear stories about its construction, the bells and the carillon. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view. Guided tours are available between 10 am and 5 pm. Book your tour in advance.
Accessibility
- Wheelchair and mobility: For people who have difficulties walking, we recommend against climbing the tower. The tower itself is not wheelchair accessible, but you can experience a virtual visit. You can also visit the tower virtually in the Visit Mechelen information office using VR glasses.
- Visual impairment: In the cathedral, there is a wooden model of the cathedral and tower that you can touch. There is also a bronze miniature version of the tower outside the cathedral (Onder-den-Toren side), which you can glide your fingers over. Dogs are not allowed in the tower.
- Auditory impairment: Subtitles to the AR images in the Ash Cellar are there to help visitors with an auditory impairment. The virtual viewers on the skywalk are not accessible to the blind and visually impaired.
- Visitors with autism: For visitors with autism, a visual step-by-step plan is provided to prepare the visit. The step-by-step plan can be found here.
