Moroccan Bakeries

For those who just can’t get enough of all those tasty treats

For a quick and delicious Burgundian bite from the Mechelen Renaissance, pop in to the nearest Moroccan bakery in town.

Thanks to Margaret of Austria, Mechelen became the hotspot for everything hip and happening at the beginning of the 16th century. 8 Mechelen tastemakers have used the new and classic ingredients of that time to create the delicacies of today.

The savoury and spicy flavours in the triangular briouat are reminiscent of the steaming cuisine at Margaret’s Court of Savoy. And the round pastilla with salty and sweet notes would happily have sat alongside the pies on the table at the home of humanist Hieronymus van Busleyden in the 16th century. Still hungry? Then be sure to take a look at the sweeter than sweet pastries. You will recognise a wide range of flavours, from almond, cinnamon, dried fruits to rosewater.

Margaret of Austria might have been surprised to know that the rich cuisine she and her guests appreciated is deeply rooted in the Arabic flavours that influenced the best European cuisine through Moorish Spain. And we continue that trend. Mmm ... Mechelen is a melting pot of connecting flavours.
