The seventeenth-century Beguinage Church has a magnificent baroque façade, after the Italian example. At the time, Mechelen’s Beguines had capital and so were able to commission well-known architects. The plans were drawn up by the Jesuit Pieter Huyssens, but the actual work was overseen by Jacques Francart, who was from Brussels and was court architect to Archduke Albrecht and Archduchess Isabella. The young Lucas Faydherbe from Mechelen can claim partial responsibility for the interior decoration.
Accessibility
Partly accessible by wheelchair. The access path and the path around the church is made of cobblestones and is uneven.
The entrance to the church has no thresholds and consists of three sets of sufficiently wide double doors. The first doors are open when the church is open for visitors. The second entrance axis has limited circulation space. There is sufficient circulation space in the church and the sights can be clearly seen from the aisle. The chairs are positioned on a raised platform of 10 cm high.
